Hi, I’m Charlotte Hayes, the creator and storyteller behind Lost in the Aroma.
If you’ve ever closed your eyes while something simmered on the stove just to take in the scent, then you already understand what this space is about. For me, aroma is memory. It is emotion. It is the first sign that something beautiful is about to be shared.
Lost in the Aroma is where I bring together recipes, sensory storytelling, and my lifelong love for food. I am so glad you’re here.
Where My Love for Food Began
I grew up in Santa Barbara, California, in a home where the kitchen was always alive with fragrance. Garlic softening in olive oil. Citrus zest brightening a cake batter. Fresh bread baking on Sunday mornings.
My mother loved experimenting with global flavors, while my father believed in perfecting a handful of classic dishes. Between the two of them, I learned both creativity and discipline in the kitchen.
As a child, I was drawn to smells before tastes. I would stand near the stove and try to guess what spices were being used. I learned to recognize cumin, rosemary, cinnamon, and thyme long before I knew how to cook with them myself.
Food felt magical to me because it engaged every sense. That fascination never faded.
Education and Early Career
I studied journalism at the University of Southern California because I loved storytelling. Writing allowed me to slow down and explore the deeper meaning behind everyday experiences.
After college, I worked as a lifestyle writer for a regional magazine. I covered travel, home design, and local businesses. Whenever I had the opportunity, I pitched stories about chefs, bakeries, and food artisans. Interviewing them felt natural. I understood their passion because it mirrored my own.
At the same time, I was constantly cooking at home. I tested recipes in the evenings, hosted dinner parties for friends, and filled notebooks with flavor combinations and plating ideas.
Eventually, I completed a culinary certificate program to formalize my skills. I wanted to understand technique as deeply as I understood narrative. Learning professional kitchen fundamentals gave me the confidence to develop recipes with structure and precision.
How Lost in the Aroma Came to Life
Lost in the Aroma started in a small apartment kitchen with white walls and limited counter space.
I began photographing the meals I made and writing about them not just as recipes, but as experiences. I described the scent of toasted spices, the sound of onions caramelizing, the way fresh basil perfumes a summer salad.
At first, the blog was simply a creative outlet. But as readers began responding to the sensory detail and thoughtful approach, I realized I had found my voice.
People told me they felt transported. They said they could almost smell the dishes through the screen. That feedback encouraged me to keep going.
What began as a personal project slowly grew into a dedicated food blog focused on immersive, approachable cooking.
My Philosophy in the Kitchen
I believe that food should be felt as much as it is tasted.
My approach is built around:
• Engaging all five senses while cooking
• Respecting high quality ingredients
• Balancing comfort and creativity
• Developing recipes that are both beautiful and practical
• Encouraging confidence through clear instruction
Aromatics are the heart of my cooking. Garlic, herbs, citrus peel, spices. These are the foundations of flavor and memory.
I want you to feel grounded and inspired when you cook. I want your kitchen to smell incredible.

Life Beyond the Blog
When I’m not cooking or writing, I love visiting farmers markets at sunrise, collecting small ceramic bowls for food styling, and traveling to experience new cuisines firsthand.
I am constantly inspired by scent. A bakery on a side street. A spice shop in a new city. A bouquet of fresh herbs on the counter.
Those moments remind me why I started.
Thank You for Being Here

Thank you for stepping into my kitchen and sharing this journey with me. I hope the aromas you create at home tell stories of their own.
